On Friday the 12th March, over 7,200 pupils got the chance to represent their school, and participate with other children up and down the country, as part of the BIGGEST EVER online schools quiz!
Aimed at 8-9 year old primary school children, the quiz covered curriculum areas from history, science, citizenship, numeracy and literacy.
From dinosaurs to a race through space... pupils were taken on a fantastic adventure.
Why did Becta launch the National School Quiz?
The National School Quiz set young minds alight with a thirst for knowledge. Having seen how computer games can enthuse children, using similar technology to expand a child’s knowledge of the curriculum in a fun and interactive way is a great way to increase learner attainment.
The quiz has been developed in partnership with a number of public and private sector organisations. Some of our leading museums and charities sponsored the themed areas and all questions were co-developed with the relevant subject association for each theme.
The quiz also encouraged schools to commit to the Next Generation Learning Charter (http://www.nextgenerationlearning.org.uk/At-School/Charter-Schools/).
How does the National School Quiz fit into school curriculum?
The questions were based on subjects being taught to 8 and 9 year old primary school children, although there are some general knowledge questions. The quiz itself was not a mandatory part of school curriculum, but helps inspire children to learn more about any subject.

Meet the hosts of the National School Quiz
Pupils were guided through the quiz by Ruby & Spike – an unlikely pair of school friends united by a passion for adventure; Ruby in the pursuit of knowledge and Spike in the pursuit of fun!
Dr Deshi, a genius inventor, challenged Ruby and Spike to collect knowledge to fill his prototype creation the Evolutionary Enhancer (EVE). The EVE is a personal IQ boosting device - anyone that wears one becomes instantly clever! In fact, the prototype invention is currently in the form of a top hat, worn by Dr Deshi’s feline companion Claude! This makes him the cleverest cat on the planet!
Ruby and Spike needed the help of school children across the country to help fill the EVE with all the knowledge the world has to offer.
