The Next Generation Learning campaign is about creating an education and training system that uses technology better to improve performance.
In the UK we’re already performing well, ranking fourth in the EU for access to internet-connected computers in schools and colleges.
However, we have a long way to go before all learners are benefiting from the opportunities better use of technology can create.
Better use of technology at Egglescliffe School, Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland means boys are now performing as well as girls.
Every department has developed the way it uses technology to meet individual learning and teaching needs. A web-based learning platform – used by staff and students both on and offsite – is transforming the teacher-learner relationship.
Teachers are having regular one-to-one conversations with students, who themselves are making the most of the technology for activities including researching and communicating. One student says: “I never really used computers before, but I’m completely switched on now.”
Deputy headteacher Ian Dennis says better results are due to “effective use of technology in the classrooms”.
The school was a runner-up in Becta’s ICT Excellence Awards 2006.
