E-safety and wi-fi

Keeping children safe online

Using the internet is great for your child’s education and development but it’s important to make sure they are safe while they’re online.

As a parent you should make sure they use the internet responsibly at home just as teachers do at school.

Practical steps

There are some simple steps to follow to ensure your child benefits safely from the opportunities offered by the web.

  1. Know what your child is doing when they go online. Get them to show you how they use the internet and learn about any applications you aren’t familiar with.
  2. Help your child understand why it’s important not to give out any personal information. Some people are not who they say they are so stress to them that they should never meet up with anyone they have talked to on the internet.
  3. Supervise your child on the internet - keep an eye on which sites they are visiting.

About wi-fi

Many households now have wi-fi internet access. Despite some recent media coverage questioning its safety, there is no consistent evidence of adverse health effects and no reason why people should not use wi-fi at home.
