Technology use at school

How do you know if your school is making good use of technology?

Technology is great for learning and teaching, and also for the organisation of a school itself. It should be a part of everyday life at the school your child goes to, but how do you really know if a school – and your child – is getting the most out of it?

  • If your child uses technology to learn on a regular basis
They should be able to explain – and show you through examples of their work – how they use different types of technology to do well in the classroom.
  • If the school uses a good range of appropriate technology
Resources, including interactive whiteboards and computers, help your child learn. Do they use them?
  • If teachers use technology too
Technology boosts learning and complements traditional teaching methods. It helps teachers do their jobs well and the school run more effectively. It also enables teachers to share information with their colleagues.
  • If your school has a website – with up-to-date advice and information – that helps you keep in touch
Many schools have their own websites, providing you and your child with regular online newsletters and details of how families can get involved in school activities, such as the school curriculum and lesson planning.

What to look out for at each stage of their education

  • Aged 4–8: are they using computers to help with literacy and maths and to explore the world around them?
  • Aged 8–11: are they using the internet to find out more about things discussed in lessons and to help with homework?
  • Aged 11+: are they completely comfortable using technology such as laptops and online learning platforms to support and build on what they learn in the classroom, taking charge of their own learning?
